Nepal Considers Requiring Internal Auditors to Be Licensed

Following a series of embezzlement cases involving accounting and internal audit staff at state entities, the Financial Comptroller General Office of Nepal is considering putting in place a legal requirement to make internal auditors of government entities get licenses. The agency says it could help internal auditors avoid conflict of interest and make them more effective.
“We have been advocating a licensing system so that only those licensed will take part in internal audit,” said Jibnath Pokharel, the deputy financial comptroller general. “This will help avoid conflict of interest as only those licensed can perform this duty.” Government staffers conducting internal audit would need further training and study to qualify for the license.
