Big Four firm KPMG has launched a Board Diversity Disclosure Benchmarking Tool. Powered by data analytics firm Esgauge, the free tool lets corporate leaders, investors, staff, and other professionals compare corporate board diversity practices by sector, stock index, and company size to analyze trends and compare companies.
“Diverse boards are more effective, and disclosure drives action,” said Susan Angele, senior advisor at the KPMG Board Leadership Center, in a statement. “As stakeholder calls continue to grow for disclosure of board diversity as well as policies and practices, this tool will help measure progress and highlight gaps.”
KPMG is seeking to provide professionals with more readily available information regarding diversity policies and demographics. Before the release of this tool, board diversity information was typically only available through review of company proxy statements and other public company disclosures. Using the tool, the KPMG Leadership Center found that fewer than 1 in 10 (8 percent) Russell 3000 companies report the proportion of board members who are racially or ethnically diverse, while 25 percent of S&P 500 companies do so.
