The City of Tye, Texas, is conducting an internal audit to look into a high number of water billing errors and complaints of soaring costs. One customer has complained that in recent months her bill more than doubled, from $50 a month to $106.
In October, residential water bill rates increased from a minimum of $20 per month plus $8.87 per 1,000-6,000 gallons to a minimum of $21 per month plus $10.59 per 1,000-6,000 gallons. But residents say the increase isn’t enough to reflect the large increases some customers are seeing in their water bills.
“The increases were considered, passed and approved by the Tye City Council and was to meet the terms for repayment of a USDA loan project for improved water and waste water services across the city,” the City said in a statement to a local news channel.
In the statement, a city official said, “Please know that an internal audit is continuing. There have been many billing errors identified and at this time it is a pending investigation and there is no further comment.”
